The Mars Exploration Rover mission was a joint project by NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). On November 4, 2003, the first of the two rovers, Spirit, was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida with the hopes of reaching the Martian surface and commencing its exploration. A few weeks later, on November 25, its counterpart, Opportunity, followed suit, continuing the legacy of scientific exploration beyond the confines of Earth.

Both Spirit and Opportunity were designed with the ability to explore the Martian surface and collect valuable data. Each rover was equipped with a suite of scientific instruments, cameras, and tools that allowed them to study the geology, climate, and presence of water on Mars. Spirit and Opportunity exceeded all expectations by far outliving their initial mission durations, which were projected to last a mere 90 Martian days, or sols. Spirit explored Mars for six years, eventually succumbing to a sand trap in 2010, while Opportunity continued its mission until 2018, dutifully performing groundbreaking research and breaking the record for the longest distance traveled on another planet.
